A survey involving over 5,600 young people from 16 African countries revealed that 60% want to leave Africa because of widespread corruption, which threatens their future prospects. Some of these young individuals believe their governments aren’t doing enough to address corruption. As a result, nearly 60% plan to emigrate within the next five years. Many young Africans feel the continent is on the wrong path, even though there’s a slight rise in those who have a positive outlook. They desire stricter penalties for corrupt politicians, such as banning them from running for office. Additionally, they are calling for a different form of governance.
Africa has around 420 million young people aged 15-35, and one-third of them are unemployed, based on data from the African Development Bank. This high unemployment rate only adds to their frustrations, making the idea of leaving their home countries for better opportunities even more appealing. Many also hope for economic reforms that create jobs and improve living standards, giving them reasons to stay and build a future in Africa.
