Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan showcased her incredible talent by securing another impressive victory in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the African Games in Ghana. Despite a false-start scare, Amusan triumphed with a remarkable time of 12.89 seconds.
During the initial race attempt, Amusan encountered a false start, which could have resulted in her disqualification. Fortunately, the officials decided to give her a yellow card, allowing her to continue competing.
This win marks Amusan’s third consecutive African Games championship, solidifying her status as a dominant force in the event. Coming in second place was Sidonie Fiadanantsoa of Madagascar, finishing with a time of 13.19 seconds.
Faith Osamuyi of Nigeria narrowly missed out on a podium finish, securing fourth place with a time of 13.77 seconds.
Amusan’s outstanding performances go beyond the African Games. She currently holds the world record in the 100-meter hurdles, achieved with an incredible time of 12.12 seconds. This record-breaking feat occurred during the semi-finals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles in Eugene, Oregon, back in 2022.
Her achievements extend to both the Commonwealth and African levels. Amusan made history as the first Nigerian to become a world champion and world record holder in athletics. She clinched gold in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2022 World Championships, setting the world record of 12.12 seconds (+0.9 m/s) in the semi-final. In the final, she continued her outstanding performance with a time of 12.06 seconds (+2.5 m/s).
Furthermore, Amusan has won consecutive titles in the 100m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022, as well as securing her third African Games championship in the event.
