A tragedy struck Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), as a stampede occurred during the distribution of palliatives by the state government. Two students have been confirmed dead as a result of the chaotic incident that took place at the institution’s convocation square.
The state government had initiated the distribution of palliatives in the form of 2 bags of 7.5 kg of rice and ₦5,000 each to students of tertiary institutions in the state. However, the distribution process at NSUK took an unexpected turn when the atmosphere became increasingly rowdy. Students forcefully gained access to the distribution premises and began seizing as many bags of rice as they could carry.
The situation quickly escalated into a stampede, with students pushing and shoveling in their desperate attempt to obtain the rice. In the turmoil, many students were trampled upon and injured. Regrettably, two students lost their lives in the tragic incident.
This unforeseen turn of events has left the NSUK community in shock and mourning. The university administration and relevant authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the stampede and the subsequent loss of lives.
It is a somber reminder of the challenges faced during relief distribution efforts. While the intention was to provide necessary support to students in need, the lack of proper organization and control resulted in a devastating outcome.
