The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has confirmed that a woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting one of its officials. The incident occurred when the official tried to apprehend her for crossing the expressway.
Lukman Ajayi, the spokesperson for the agency, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday. The woman was arrested on Tuesday around 12:45 pm at Ile-Epo, along the Ikeja/Iyana-Ipaja expressway, for crossing the 10-lane road.
There was a pedestrian bridge available at the location, but the woman chose to disregard the state’s laws. As a result, she was immediately taken to a magistrate court for crossing the expressway and assaulting the agency’s official. The woman assaulted the KAI personnel and was promptly charged. She was given a sentence of either paying a fine of ₦75,000 or serving four months in prison.
The spokesperson stressed the importance of pedestrians using the provided pedestrian bridges, as they are there for their safety. He also urged residents to refrain from selling or displaying their goods on walkways, lay-bys, or areas designated for pedestrians.
Ajayi emphasized that there is no alternative but to obey and comply with the state’s Environmental Laws of 2010, as amended. It is crucial for everyone to follow these laws to maintain safety and order in the state.
