Landmark Beach Resort

Landmark Beach Resort

In a letter dated March 19, 2024, the Lagos State Government has informed the proprietor of Landmark Beach Resort, Paul Onwuanibe, about the impending demolition of a portion of the popular resort. The demolition is necessary to make way for the construction of the coastal highway as part of the Lagos-Calabar road project. The letter, signed by Tpl. Shomolu O., Deputy Director of the Development Matters Department, on behalf of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, grants Onwuanibe seven days to vacate the premises.

Onwuanibe, the 58-year-old owner of Landmark Beach Resort, revealed that the government claimed his resort falls within the right of way of the planned 700-kilometer coastal highway that aims to connect Lagos to Calabar. He acquired the land in 2007, before the plans for the coastal highway were made, and expressed a mix of emotions upon receiving the demolition order. He described his reaction as a combination of amazement, concern, and disbelief.

The Landmark Beach Resort, valued at over $200 million, is a premier destination that attracted approximately one million visitors, both local and foreign, last year. It is home to more than 80 businesses and provides over 4,000 direct jobs. Additionally, it contributes over 2 billion naira ($1.5 million) in annual tax revenue.

The Lagos State Government had previously announced the demolition in two national newspapers, bringing attention to the planned action.

The order to demolish the Landmark Beach Resort underscores the government’s commitment to the development of the coastal highway project. However, it also raises concerns about the impact on the local economy, employment, and the tourism industry. Onwuanibe and other affected parties will need to explore compensation claims in accordance with the government’s directive.

This development highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing infrastructure development with the preservation of existing businesses and recreational facilities. It remains to be seen how stakeholders will navigate these complex issues moving forward.
