On Saturday morning, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lost his life in a lone accident along the Sango-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State. The young Corps member, whose identity remains unknown, was tragically killed in the accident that occurred at the Ago Adura axis of Itori town in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.
The only means of identification for the deceased Corps member was the NYSC cap found in his vehicle after the accident. The incident took place around 6:55 am, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young life. The Corps member, who was driving an ash-colored Mercedes-Benz saloon car with the registration number JJJ 168 JF, was among those deployed to the D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori for the one-year mandatory national service.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, including students from the institution, revealed that the accident occurred just a few meters away from the school gate where the Corps member was serving. According to reports, the cause of the accident was attributed to excessive speeding and a lack of concentration on the part of the deceased.
It was reported that the driver of the car had dozed off while driving, leading to a loss of control and the car tumbling before crashing from the inward Abeokuta lane to the outward lane. The tragic accident could have been averted if the driver had been more alert and focused on the road.
The Ogun State-owned Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the details of the accident. He stated that it took the combined efforts of TRACE officials and members of the community to evacuate the corpse from the accident site. Eventually, TRACE agents moved the deceased Corps member’s remains to the Ifo General Hospital morgue.
