Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, and his wife Mabel have decided to part ways after two decades of what they referred to as “friendship/marriage.” AY confirmed the separation in a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday, expressing his need to keep personal family matters private.
AY shared, “Many people believe that staying silent simply means that one is incapable of dealing with issues. Projecting a negative narrative against someone who is not struggling to defend himself doesn’t mean he is weak.”
The comedian further explained that he had reached a point in his life where he could no longer share deep personal family issues with the public, particularly considering the impact it could have on his grown-up daughter, who has access to social media. Protecting her mental health from any distressing online content is of utmost importance to him.
While AY acknowledged his own shortcomings and the difficulties associated with the separation, he emphasized that assigning blame in such situations is complex and that no one is entirely innocent. He expressed frustration at how lies about him spread faster than the truth through various blogs, but remained hopeful that his painful truth would eventually prevail over falsehoods.
Similarly, Mabel, in her Instagram post on the same day, revealed her new approach to disrespect, stating, “Distance is my new response to disrespect. I don’t react, I don’t argue. I don’t dive into the drama. I just removed myself.”
AY and Mabel tied the knot in November 2008 and were blessed with two children. The news of their separation comes as a shock to many fans who have followed their journey over the years.
Our thoughts go out to AY, Mabel, and their family during this difficult time.
