Controversial crossdresser Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for abusing the naira. The Federal High Court in Lagos handed down the sentence on Friday, with Justice Abimbola Awogboro stating that it would serve as a deterrent to others who engage in similar acts of abusing and mutilating the currency.
Before the sentence was passed, the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly responded that he identifies as male. The judge ruled that the prison term would begin on March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had charged Bobrisky with abusing the naira; he had previously entered a guilty plea. Sentence was originally scheduled to be delivered by the court on Tuesday, April 9, 2024; however, it was postponed because the Federal Government had declared a public holiday in observance of Eid-el-Fitr.
Following his conviction, Bobrisky appealed to the court for leniency, claiming that he was unaware of the law regarding the abuse of the naira. In his plea, he stated that, as a social media influencer with over five million followers, he would use his platform to educate and inform his audience about the proper handling of money. However, the judge emphasized that ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
Bobrisky expressed remorse for his actions and assured the court that he would not repeat the offense.
