Purpose and Versatility: The new National ID Card, known as the General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), serves a variety of purposes. It is designed to be a versatile card that can be used for payments and financial transactions, accessing government intervention programs and services, and facilitating travel within and outside the country.

Enhanced Features: The new ID card boasts several additional features that set it apart from the current National Identification Number (NIN) card. One notable feature is its payment capabilities, which allow individuals to use the card as a debit or prepaid card by linking it to their bank accounts. This feature provides convenience and promotes a cashless economy. Additionally, the card enables eligible individuals to access various government intervention programs, such as cash transfer initiatives, agricultural loans, health insurance, and more. It serves as a gateway to essential social services.

Machine-Readable Zone: In line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for e-passports, the new National ID Card will have a machine-readable zone. This feature enhances its compatibility and interoperability with other identification systems globally.

Application Process: To obtain the new National ID Card, individuals will need to apply using their National Identification Number (NIN). The application can be made through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks. This multi-channel approach ensures that applicants have options that suit their preferences and convenience.

Issuance Process: Once the application is submitted, the issuance of the new ID card will be facilitated through the applicants’ respective banks. The existing protocols for the issuance of debit or credit cards will be followed, ensuring a streamlined and efficient process.

Card Pick-Up: Once the card is ready for collection, applicants will be notified to pick it up at a designated center. Alternatively, for those who prefer convenience, there will be an option to have the card delivered to their requested location, albeit at an additional cost. This flexibility accommodates the diverse needs of individuals across Nigeria.

The introduction of the new National ID Card through banks marks a significant step in enhancing the accessibility and functionality of identification systems in Nigeria. With its versatile features and convenient issuance process, the card aims to provide individuals with a secure and comprehensive identification solution that caters to their financial, governmental, and travel needs.
