On the evening of March 15th, 34-year-old Sarah Curran of Detroit checked into an unregistered cosmetic surgery facility seeking a Brazilian butt lift to enhance her appearance. Tragically, this mother of 5 young children would never return home following fatal complications from the illegal procedure.
The Botched Surgery
At around 9pm, uncertified cosmetic surgeon Juan Juan Carlos administered local anesthesia and began surgically inserting fat grafts into Curran’s buttocks and hips. However, initial reports allege that within 30 minutes, the inexperienced operator had punctured Curran’s intestines, bladder and liver with the grafting cannulas.
Swift Medical Decline
Bleeding and organs damage internally, Curran’s condition immediately declined as shock set in. Though the facility contacted 911, by the time an ambulance arrived at 10:30pm, she had lost consciousness and her blood pressure was plummeting. Curran died en route to the hospital barely an hour after the surgery began.
Family Heartbreak
Husband Thomas Curran received the devastating call from police late that night. “I kept hoping it wasn’t real – that there had been some mistake. But then I had to tell our heartbroken kids their mother wasn’t coming home,” he said. Daughter Emma Curran set up a GoFundMe to help support her younger siblings aged 3 to 13.
Charges Filed
Following an autopsy and investigation by Detroit police, Juan Carlos now faces charges of negligent homicide, practicing medicine without a license and failing to report a death. The rundown facility he operated also had no ambulance or proper surgical equipment on site.
This tragic case underscores the life-threatening risks associated with “bargain” surgeries from illegal, unqualified practitioners. While patients understandably seek cost savings, extreme bodily modifications should never be attempted outside of accredited medical centres and licenses oversight. Curran leaves behind a grieving family struggling to comprehend her entirely preventable passing.
