Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charley Boy, has recently expressed his criticism towards the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing them of engaging in “frivolous shenanigans to keep distracting Nigerians.” In particular, he questioned the EFCC’s focus on going after celebrities for what he referred to as “Naira abuse.”
Charley Boy argued that spraying Naira, a common practice in social events, is a part of Nigeria’s age-old culture that promotes bonding among people. He questioned why the EFCC is prioritizing cases of Naira abuse instead of focusing on more serious crimes. He specifically mentioned the three-count charge brought against Paschal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, stating that it gives the impression that the EFCC has no important tasks to address and is instead engaging in frivolous acts to distract Nigerians who are already facing challenges of poverty and hunger.
Taking to Instagram, Charley Boy expressed his frustration, highlighting that the current attention being given to the issue of Naira spraying has no significant impact on the well-being of ordinary people or the national economy. He criticized the EFCC for placing massive energy on what he considers to be a harmless misdemeanor committed by people simply having fun, rather than focusing on those who misuse their executive powers to embezzle large amounts from the public treasury without consequences.
In his Instagram post, Charley Boy expressed his discontent with the EFCC’s actions, stating, “God punish all of una in EFCC, una no go die better. Ur Fathers.” He further questioned whether the EFCC believes that going after individuals engaged in Naira spraying is the kind of work they should be prioritizing.
