UCH Resident Doctors Protest Over Security Breach And Assault

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, have commenced a three-day strike in response to an alleged assault on one of their members by relatives of a patient. The strike was initiated by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH.

  • The resident doctors decided to go on strike due to the assault on one of their members, which occurred on Sunday, March 3.
  • The assault took place when the doctor was attending to a known sickle cell patient in a painful crisis at the emergency department.
  • The relatives of the patient confronted the doctor in the consulting room and physically attacked him.
  • In an attempt to escape, the doctor was chased down and further assaulted.
  • The hospital’s security officers intervened and rescued the doctor, but not before he sustained injuries.

Demands and concerns of the resident doctors:

  • The ARD is demanding a public apology from the individuals who assaulted their member and caused him harm.
  • They are also calling on the hospital management to improve security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
  • The doctors expressed concern about the physical and mental well-being of their colleague, who suffered both physical injuries and psychological distress as a result of the assault
