The Federal Government has taken a decisive step by suspending the operations of Dana Airline due to concerns surrounding the safety and financial viability of their operations. This action comes shortly after an incident involving one of the airline’s aircraft, with registration number 5N BKI, skidding off the runway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday morning, April 23.
In a letter addressed to the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, the Ministry of Aviation expressed serious safety concerns regarding recent incidents involving Dana Airline. The letter, titled “Immediate Suspension of Dana Airline Pending Safety and Financial Health Audit,” was sent through the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole.

The Ministry stated that as the supervisor responsible for overseeing the nation’s aviation safety and regulatory compliance, it had become evident that the recent incidents involving Dana Airline raised significant concerns regarding both the safety and financial viability of their operations. With the safety and well-being of citizens and travelers being of paramount importance, the Honourable Minister directed the immediate suspension of Dana Airline’s fleet until a comprehensive audit could be conducted.
This audit is expected to cover all aspects of safety protocols, maintenance procedures, and financial health to ensure full compliance with aviation regulations. The recent incidents have highlighted the urgency of this matter, and it is crucial that swift and decisive action is taken to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders involved.
The Ministry expressed trust in the expertise and diligence of the NCAA in carrying out this audit thoroughly and expeditiously. They requested regular updates on the progress and any significant findings throughout the process. The Ministry also conveyed deep appreciation for the dedication of the NCAA in upholding the highest standards of aviation safety.
This suspension serves as a strong message that the Nigerian government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of air travelers. It underscores the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations and the need for airlines to maintain financial stability to guarantee sustainable operations. The comprehensive audit will provide valuable insights into the safety and financial health of Dana Airline, enabling necessary measures to be taken to address any identified issues.
