Premier League side Brentford FC have exercised their option to sign highly-rated Nigerian defender Benjamin Frederick on a permanent deal. According to respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Bees have opted to trigger the clause in the 18-year-old’s contract to keep him at the club until 2028.
Frederick came through the youth ranks at Nigerian academy Simoiben FC, owned by Super Eagles winger Moses Simon. He made his debut for hometown club ABS FC in early 2022 before being snapped up by Brentford that August on an initial season-long loan deal with an option to buy.
Though yet to make his full senior debut, the young centre-back has long been tipped for a bright future after impressing for Nigeria’s U20 side. Frederick played every minute as the Flying Eagles finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. He was then included in their squad for the U20 World Cup in Argentina the following month.
While finding minutes hard to come by amidst Brentford’s safety push in the Premier League, scouts were said to be impressed by Frederick’s composure, defensive technique and potential during training. His integration with the first-team group, culminating in a spot on the bench for an FA Cup tie in January, convinced the Bees hierarchy of his long-term prospects.
By activating the clause, Brentford have secured Frederick’s services through to 2028 – likely making him available for the senior side while gaining valuable experience out on loan first. The decision fits the club’s philosophy of scouting overlooked talents and giving youth a clear pathway into the top flight. It also maintains their strategy of regularly reinvesting sale profits back into development of The next generation of stars.
Fans will hope Frederick can follow the rapid rise of players like Rico Henry and Joshua Dasilva in West London.
