The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has taken a decisive step by dispatching a protest letter to the headquarters of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Signed jointly by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, the letter was also forwarded to key government officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Federal Minister of Labour & Employment, and the Federal Minister of Power, alongside all Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
The letter sets a stern ultimatum, demanding that NERC reverses its recent tariff hike by May 12, 2024, failing which the unions threaten to initiate mass actions.
Highlighting the detrimental impact of the tariff hike on the already burdened masses, the union leaders expressed vehement opposition, denouncing NERC’s decision as morally reprehensible and a disregard for fundamental principles and statutory obligations. They declared it as an unjust exploitation that cannot be tolerated.
Furthermore, the letter underscores NERC’s regulatory role in overseeing electricity tariffs and ensuring fairness in the sector. The unions accused NERC of neglecting its responsibilities and colluding with DISCOs and GENCOs to impose oppressive pricing regimes, contrary to its mandate as an unbiased ombudsman.
Emphasizing the violation of established legal procedures and the rights of Nigerian citizens, the unions issued a clear warning: failure to comply with the ultimatum will prompt immediate and vigorous actions. They threatened to mobilize their members to occupy NERC and DISCO offices nationwide until justice prevails.
