Officials from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have sealed the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCo) in Bauchi. This action was taken due to alleged non-compliance with letters requesting electricity operators and regulators to lower electricity costs and introduce consumer bands in the state.
Members of the NLC and TUC gathered at the main entrance of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, sealing the gate and preventing access to staff and visitors. The enforcement efforts extended to the NERC and TCN offices in various locations across Bauchi metropolis, ensuring their closure as well.
During the peaceful protest, union members displayed placards with messages such as “NLC/TUC Says No To Exploitation,” “No Segregation in Power Supply,” and “No More Band A, B, or even Z.”
Addressing the members, Bauchi State NLC Chairperson, Comrade Dauda Shuaibu, stated that the union had sent letters to the distribution companies (discos) demanding an immediate reversal of the new tariff. Failure to comply led to the enforcement actions witnessed that day.
Shuaibu further expressed concerns about reports of the JEDCo office in Yelwa continuing operations, selling units, and making remittances. He emphasized the union’s determination to shut down all operations until the new electricity tariff is reversed.
The union called upon the Federal Government to swiftly address the issue, highlighting the hardships faced by Nigerians amid the tariff increase and inadequate power supply. They vowed to continue the struggle until their demands are met, warning of further actions if necessary.
