The persistent wave of kidnappings and other security crises have left many Nigerians wondering if there will ever be an end to the turmoil. With abductions now commonplace across states for ransom and political gains, citizens live in constant fear. Whether on the highways or in remote villages, all are vulnerable to the criminal gangs fueled by greed, sectarian agitation, and a breakdown of law and order.
Government security agencies have seemingly been unable to curb the unrest. while negotiations and ransom payments in many cases only serve to further finance the “kidnap for profit” industry. The destabilizing impact has also taken an economic and mental health toll on communities. With growing incidents of lynching and civil unrest, tension prevails.
While the roots and resolution will require significant long term efforts, immediate action and regional cooperation are imperative. Protection of innocent lives must be the priority through intelligence-driven security operations. Politicians must rise above ethnic, religious differences to form a united front against terrorist networks.
Most importantly, average Nigerians yearn for their right to live freely without fear. As leaders, we must find a holistic solution and return this nation to the peaceful harmony it deserves, where parents can let their children play without worry and all can live as one satisfied person. There must be an end to this insecurity.
