Patricia Temitope Alabi, widely known as Tope Alabi, was born on October 27th, 1970, as the only daughter of Pa Joseph Akinyele and Madam Agnes Kehinde. Hailing from Yewa, Imeko, in Ogun State, Tope grew up in an environment of strict discipline instilled by her mother.
She attended Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, where she obtained her West Africa School Certificate in 1986. Tope then pursued a Mass Communication degree at the Polytechnic Ibadan, graduating in 1990.
Tope’s initial dream was to become a star actress, which led her to join a theater group while in secondary school. She became a part of the Jesters International group in 1983, acting alongside Papilolo and Aderupoko. She also worked with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Ibadan from 1990 to 1991. Later, she joined Centre-spread Advertising Limited in Lagos from 1991 to 1992.
Returning to her passion for acting, Tope joined the Alade Aromire Theatre group in 1994. It was within this group that she discovered her talent for singing and creating soundtracks for movie productions.
Today, Tope Alabi is hailed as the pacesetter of soundtracks in the Yoruba home video industry. She is married to Soji Alabi, who also serves as her manager and producer. Together, they have been blessed with children. In her free time, Tope enjoys watching movies, table tennis, and going on vacation.
Tope gained prominence in 2000 with the release of her debut album, “Oore ti O Common” (Uncommon Favor). This album brought her fame and earned her the monikers “Oore ti o Common” and “Agbo Jesu.” Before that, she had released two albums, “Ikoko Dudu” and “Baba Iwo la k’epe.”
Tope has released a total of eleven albums. Her latest album, “The Spirit of Light” in 2019, was a collaboration with popular songwriter and photographer TY Bello. According to Tope, the album was not planned; they simply wanted to worship God, but it turned into a remarkable album. One of the tracks, “Logan ti o de,” broke the internet within a few hours of its release.
Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji, run a music label called Tope Alabi Gospel Vibes. Under this label, they organize events and concerts where people come together to worship God. One of the notable worship concerts they hold is the annual “Praise The Almighty Concert.”
Additionally, they established the Mardebra Comforter Foundation, a subsidiary of Gospel Vibes, through which they provide support to orphans and the less privileged. Tope Alabi’s music and philanthropic endeavors have made a significant impact, touching the lives of many.
