Tech billionaire Elon Musk has issued a threat to ban Apple devices from his companies’ premises if the iPhone creator proceeds with its planned integration of OpenAI. The announcement came after Apple revealed its partnership with OpenAI during its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference on June 10.

In the upcoming iOS 18, Apple announced that users will be able to ask voice assistant Siri questions. If Siri believes that OpenAI’s ChatGPT can provide assistance, it will ask for permission to share the question and present the answer directly, eliminating the need to open the ChatGPT iOS app. Additionally, documents such as photos and PDFs can be sent to ChatGPT in the same manner.

Musk, known for his involvement in companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, reacted strongly to the news, calling it a “security violation.” In a post, he expressed his dissatisfaction with Apple’s integration of OpenAI at the operating system level and threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies’ premises. Musk further stated that visitors would be required to check their Apple devices at the door and store them in a Faraday cage, a measure used to block electromagnetic signals.

Elon Musk criticized Apple’s reliance on OpenAI, questioning why the company couldn’t develop its own artificial intelligence. He expressed concerns about privacy and data security, suggesting that Apple may not fully understand the implications of handing user data over to OpenAI.

The clash between Elon Musk and Apple highlights the ongoing competition and differing perspectives within the tech industry regarding AI development and data privacy. As the integration of AI continues to expand, companies will need to navigate these complexities and address concerns raised by influential figures like Musk.
