The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning against protests scheduled for August 1, 2024, in the FCT. During a press briefing following the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja on July 25, Wike emphasized that August 1 is reserved for the Chairmen of the six Area Councils to present certificates of recognition to traditional rulers.
Wike stated, “That is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to jubilate, to give out certificates of recognition for their traditional rulers. We will not allow that day that FCT has set aside to honor their traditional rulers to be disrupted by protests.”
The minister highlighted the importance of celebrating achievements under the current administration and stressed that the day should be dedicated to rejoicing and honoring traditional leaders, rather than facing disruptions from protests.
While acknowledging the right of citizens to protest or demonstrate, Wike emphasized the need for such actions to be conducted within the confines of the law. He urged Nigerians to unite and work collectively to address the challenges facing the country.
Wike expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to tackle the nation’s problems and highlighted the support provided to the FCT for ongoing developments. He urged patience and emphasized the government’s commitment to progress and maintaining peace in the region.
In conclusion, Wike said that protests on August 1 or around that time would not be permitted in the FCT, emphasizing the government’s dedication to advancing the FCT as a prominent city on both the African and global stage.
