In reaction to the disconnection of users who had not linked their SIM cards to National Identification Numbers (NINs), MTN, a major telecommunications provider in Nigeria experienced a brief countrywide shutdown. This resulted in customer frustration and instances of destruction which led MTN suspending activity for some time.
MTN has declared its reentry into nationwide services via X (previously known as Twitter) after the disturbance. Customers can now go to MTN’s physical stores, which will operate from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and get their desired assistance. Furthermore, they assured clients of access to round-the-clock digital support channels that would effectively address all issues and inquiries raised by them.
Introduced in December 2020, the aim of the NIN-SIM linkage regulation is to enhance Nigeria’s security infrastructure and uphold a precise record of SIM ownership. Despite numerous deadline extensions, which includes one until July 31st, 2024; there still exists an alarming number of phone lines that have not yet been verified.
Following the disruptions, telecommunications operators were directed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to promptly restore all affected lines. The NCC stressed that regulatory requirements must be adhered to and NIN details for all SIM cards verified successfully in order to enhance national security measures.
