President Bola Tinubu has been urged to reinstate subsidies on electricity and fuel to avoid sparking renewed protests from Nigerians. The Osun State Civil Societies Coalition, representing various civil society organizations in the state, issued a statement at the conclusion of the official 10-day period for the #EndBadGovernance protest.
The coalition’s chairman, Waheed Lawal, signed the statement condemning President Tinubu’s nationwide address regarding the protests. He emphasized that youths are prepared to return to the streets to demand good governance.
Lawal called on the federal government to implement policies that would alleviate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, rather than merely distributing palliatives to the states. The coalition also demanded the release of detained protesters.
“The #EndBadGovernance protest has ended today,” Lawal noted. “Unfortunately, the president has not addressed all the issues raised by the protesters. He spoke without listening to the cries of Nigerians who are suffering from economic hardship.”
He added, “We demand the reversal of the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies,or Reinstate Subsidies as it has exacerbated hyperinflation and increased the cost of living. We also call for the immediate release of all protesters in police custody, including those arrested during the #EndSARS protest, and adequate compensation for human rights violations.”
Lawal urged the federal government to act swiftly to avoid further pushing citizens to their limits. “If the President ignores the demands of Nigerians, we will organize a larger, more disciplined movement of people and youths for another round of protests for a better Nigeria,” he warned.
