Prominent legal expert Afe Babalola has criticized the Federal government, claiming it has reduced Nigerians to beggars and is pushing the citizens towards poverty.
Babalola voiced his concerns in response to the recent distribution of palliatives intended to alleviate the economic difficulties faced by the populace.
He expressed his views during a public event on Thursday, August 16.
Babalola emphasized that those complaining about hunger do so genuinely. He mentioned that when people are hungry, they can go to great lengths to express their frustration. He believes the protests are legitimate and that the government should pay attention to them.
According to Afe Babalola, the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the welfare of its people. He highlighted that the current issue is the lack of safety, which has forced people to abandon their farms due to fear of attacks. This, according to him, is a result of the government’s failure, which has led to widespread hunger.
Afe Babalola criticized the government’s approach of distributing garri, beans, and rice as palliatives, arguing that it turns people into beggars and leads to poverty. He believes this discourages individuals from working, whereas the government should create an enabling environment where people can work and sustain themselves.
Regarding the recent calls for constitutional reform, Afe Babalola said he agrees with the idea but does not support the notion of a constitutional conference. He pointed out that when President Bola Tinubu suggested reverting to the old National Anthem, it was adopted by the National Assembly and approved by the President without a conference. He advocates for the revival and re-enactment of the 1963 constitution, which he believes was created collectively by the people.
