There are indications that the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery has begun a production test-run of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) before its scheduled release in September. According to a recent report by Reuters, the refinery is currently undergoing test runs for petrol production, with full operation expected to start by mid-September.
However, citing a note by IIR Energy, an oil industry monitor, the report indicated that the commencement date could potentially be extended further. IIR informed its clients that further extensions are possible.
Previously, the Nigerian government had announced that the Dangote Refinery would commence petrol production in September 2024. This was revealed in a statement from a Nigerian Government Committee headed by Finance Minister Wale Edun, focusing on the implementation of crude oil sales in Naira to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries.
Despite these announcements, neither the Dangote Refinery nor its owner, Aliko Dangote, has issued any new comments on the commencement date, except for the mid-August timeline announced earlier in July 2024.
Dangote has announced multiple start dates for petrol production, none of which have materialized. On May 18, 2024, Dangote declared that production would begin in June, eliminating the need for Nigeria to import petrol. However, this target was initially delayed to July, and then shifted to August, before the government announced on August 20 that the plant would release PMS in September.
The refinery is currently facing a crude supply crisis and other operational challenges, which have contributed to the delays in commencing full production.
