In recent news, Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto expressed deep concern over the ongoing persecution of Christians in Northern Nigeria. He noted that those responsible for these acts are often not held accountable.
During a virtual address at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria, Eko Subordinate Council, themed ‘Christian Martyrdom in Nigeria…a Building Block or Stumbling Block to Salvation or Patriotism,’ held in Lagos, Bishop Kukah highlighted these issues. He pointed out that despite the mistreatment of Christians in the region, no one has been prosecuted for these actions.
The bishop also criticized the ethnic divisions that have been injected into Christianity in Nigeria. He emphasized that such attitudes should be abandoned.
“If you look at our country – Nigeria, the issue is that, in Northern Nigeria, Christians form some of the groups that you can harm without facing consequences. You can ask yourself has anybody ever been charged for burning churches or for destroying Christian properties. A pastor was openly killed in Adamawa. Priests were murdered in Benue and Kaduna.”
Bishop Kukah mentioned that targeting Christians seems to go unpunished, and these incidents should concern all Christians throughout Nigeria. He lamented that Christianity has largely been overshadowed by ethnic biases.
He elaborated on the challenges Christians face, including being denied land to build churches, especially in parts of Northern Nigeria. He also shared similar issues faced in other countries like Kenya.
Bishop Kukah urged Christians to continue preaching the gospel, irrespective of political and ethnic divisions. He mentioned that martyrdom is not just about being killed but also about standing for the truth.
Reflecting on past challenges, such as the era of dictator Abacha, he noted he was often warned about the dangers of speaking out. Yet, he believes that Christians are daily challenged to martyrdom, facing the figurative sword for their beliefs.
