The police in Lagos have arrested a 23-year-old mother, Rukayat Dada, for allegedly trying to murder her epileptic child.
According to reports, on March 3rd, Rukayat fed insecticide to her one-year-old daughter, Wuraola, in an attempt to end the little girl’s life.
The child was immediately taken ill, prompting Rukayat to rush her to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. During treatment, Rukayat confessed to the doctor that she had poisoned the infant.
Sources say Rukayat told medical staff she was frustrated with her daughter’s epilepsy condition and that desperate measures to cure it had failed. In a misguided attempt, she resorted to poisoning the defenceless child.
Doctors were able to save Wuraola’s life after administering urgent treatment upon discovering the insecticide in her system. Rukayat has since been handed over to the police for further questioning and prosecution.
Epilepsy is a common neurological condition in children that can be managed effectively with proper care and medical supervision. Child experts have expressed shock over this tragic incident, underscoring the need for more support systems for parents dealing with the challenges of childhood disabilities.
