Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is poised to join Barcelona as an emergency signing after reaching an agreement with the Spanish club. Having previously decided to retire when his contract with Juventus expired, the former Arsenal goalkeeper is set to come out of retirement to play for Barcelona.

Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal has been finalized between the parties following a severe knee injury suffered by Barcelona’s primary goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, which cut short his season. Ter Stegen, aged 32, was carried off the field during Barcelona’s 5-1 victory against Villarreal. Manager Hansi Flick immediately recognized the severity of the injury and described it as a ‘huge injury’ in a conversation with DAZN.

The German international sustained a tear in the patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap to the shinbone in his right leg. Barcelona is now expected to officially sign Szczesny, who previously played for Arsenal, on a one-year deal as he comes out of retirement. A medical examination is scheduled to take place in Spain later this week, after which Szczesny will join Hansi Flick’s squad.

The club has the latitude to pay him up to 80 percent of Ter Stegen’s £7.5 million salary. At 34, Szczesny, who earned 84 caps for Poland, had made 200 appearances for Juventus over a seven-year stint after transferring from Arsenal for £12.5 million.
