Governor Adeleke of Osun State has granted clemency to Segun Olowookere, a young man who was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to death in 2014.
According to a statement issued by his media aide, Olawale Rasheed, on Thursday, December 27, Olowookere was pardoned along with his accomplice, Sunday Morakinyo.
Reports about the pair receiving a death sentence for stealing a fowl had circulated widely on social media. However, the Osun State Judiciary clarified that the conviction was for armed robbery, which included the theft of items from a poultry farm in 2010.
The governor’s statement revealed that pardons were granted to a total of 53 inmates, following the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. Among these, 30 inmates received remission of their sentences, while 12 others were granted outright pardons for lesser offences.
In the case of six individuals who had been sentenced to death, Governor Adeleke commuted their sentences. Four of these, including Sunday Morakinyo and Segun Olowookere, were granted outright pardons. Another inmate’s death sentence was commuted to 15 years imprisonment due to time already served.
Olowookere and his accomplice were arrested in 2010 for breaking into the homes of a police officer and another individual. In 2014, Justice Falola of the Osun State High Court found them guilty and sentenced them to death by hanging.
