In a devastating incident, three students from Abia State University Uturu, who were studying medicine and surgery, lost their lives in an auto crash along the Okigwe axis of the Enugu-Umuahia Expressway. The unfortunate accident occurred as the students were returning to Aba from the school’s induction ceremony for medical students on Thursday, March 21, 2024.
According to Punch, the students’ vehicle lost control, resulting in a somersault that claimed the lives of three of them. Two other students sustained severe injuries and are currently fighting for their lives in the hospital. Miraculously, one student survived the crash.
The identity of one of the deceased students has been confirmed as Favour Okpanku, a 500-level medical and surgical student. The loss has sent shockwaves through the Abia State University community, leaving friends, family, and classmates in mourning.
Following the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) swiftly responded to the scene. Corps Commander Fredrick Ogiden of the Abia State FRSC confirmed the accident, stating that the vehicle involved was an ash-colored private Toyota Camry. The crash occurred at the Okigwe axis of the Enugu-Umuahia Expressway.
A viral video circulating online shows the presence of FRSC personnel at the accident site, as well as the wreckage of the vehicle involved.
This tragic auto crash serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the need for constant vigilance on the roads. The Abia State University community is left grappling with grief and seeking solace in the memories of their departed colleagues. As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, it is hoped that measures will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
