According to football transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, Premier League club Arsenal have agreed on a £32.67 million deal in principle with Real Sociedad to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.
The 28-year-old has committed to a four-year contract, with the option for an additional year.
Merino now needs to undergo a medical before finalizing a long-term contract, with personal terms already settled.
The acquisition of the 28-year-old will strengthen Arsenal midfield, with Merino expected to play as a No. 8.
Merino was part of the Spain team that won Euro 2024, featuring in all seven matches and scoring a late winner against Germany in the quarter-final.
He will be Arsenal’s third signing of the transfer window, following Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain goalkeeper David Raya, whom the Gunners activated an option to buy permanently from Brentford.
Mikel Merino can operate as a deeper-lying midfielder, and it is believed he will complement Declan Rice, who occasionally played a ‘box-to-box’ role last season.
Merino, who has 28 caps for Spain, made 45 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals.
