Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has stopped a temporary policy that let visitors apply for work permits while staying in Canada.
The policy, started in August 2020, was to help visitors stay in Canada because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
With this policy, visitors could apply for work permits without leaving Canada.
It also allowed people who had work permits before but changed to visitor status to apply for new work permits and work legally while waiting for a decision.
Although the policy was supposed to last until February 28, 2025, the Canadian government has ended it to manage the number of temporary residents and maintain the immigration system’s integrity. The government noted that some were misusing the policy to make foreign nationals work without authorization.
However, applications submitted before August 28, 2024, will still be processed under the old rules.
This change might affect migrants, including many Nigerians who hoped to stay in Canada through this policy.
It comes during a time of higher tension, with many international students protesting new immigration policies that could deport about 70,000 of them.
