Charly Boy

Charly Boy, the singer and activist, recently disclosed why he struggled to understand his late father, Chukwudifu Oputa, who was a former Supreme Court Justice. The strained relationship between them stemmed primarily from Charly Boy’s rebellious and nonconformist nature. Despite the complicated dynamics, Charly Boy now acknowledges that he inherited significant traits and lessons from his father.

During an interview on the ‘With Chude’ podcast, Charly Boy recounted the turbulent relationship he had with his father. He explained that his rebellious streak began at home, where he constantly questioned his father’s strict rules. Justice Oputa’s regimented approach to daily life—dictating meal times, prayer times, and other activities—was a source of friction for Charly Boy. He grew increasingly frustrated with the rigidity and control exerted by his father, which led to frequent punishments and confrontations.

Charly Boy highlighted that his father encouraged inquiry and investigation, a lesson that ironically fueled his rebellion. This paradox created frequent vocal battles between father and son, as Charly Boy continuously challenged the status quo enforced by his father.

The activist admitted that this clash of personalities significantly affected their relationship. Both father and son misunderstood each other’s perspectives, leading to a lack of mutual appreciation and emotional bonding during Justice Oputa’s lifetime. Charly Boy confessed that they did not see eye to eye on many topics, which prevented them from connecting on a deeper level.

It was only as they both matured and Justice Oputa grew older that they began to appreciate the complexities of each other’s personalities. This late-stage understanding allowed them to see the beauty in their individual traits and temperaments. Reflecting on this, Charly Boy revealed that it was only after this period of maturity that they began to understand and respect each other. Nonetheless, the years of misunderstanding left an indelible mark on their relationship.
