Just weeks after having to leave the Miss South Africa pageant, Ms. Chidinma Onwe Adetshina has now been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024.
The 23-year-old won the title by beating 24 other contestants at the event held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos today, August 31.
Chidinma Adetshina joined the Nigerian pageant after leaving Miss South Africa due to controversy over her nationality.
Born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother and raised in Soweto, Chidinma faced harsh criticism from some South Africans who argued she wasn’t eligible because her father isn’t South African.
South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, looked into her citizenship after a request from the Miss South Africa organizers and complaints from the public. They found that Chidinma’s mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman, which led Chidinma to withdraw from the competition.
