Chief Bode George, a leader within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the Federal Government to be transparent and accountable in the oil and gas sector. He emphasized the need for honesty about fuel subsidy payments to Nigerians.
George, who previously served as the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, criticized the government’s inconsistent stance on removing the subsidy on petrol, stating that it has left Nigerians confused. He believes citizens have the right to clear and truthful information.
There has been ongoing debate about whether the Federal Government has indeed removed the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) as President Bola Tinubu announced in May 2023. On June 5, 2024, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, claimed on X.com that the government is still secretly paying the subsidy.
Speaking from his office in Ikoyi, Lagos State, on Thursday, Chief Bode George called for transparency, noting that conflicting statements from the government are causing confusion.
He criticized the decision to sell crude oil to Dangote’s refinery in naira, calling it harmful to the country’s already fragile economy. George argued that selling crude oil in naira, instead of foreign currency, undermines Nigeria’s external reserves.
In his words, this policy could severely impact the country’s financial stability, as crude oil is a major source of foreign income.
