Nigeria’s women’s (D’Tigress Roar) basketball team made history by becoming the first team from Africa, men or women, to reach the quarter-finals of an Olympic basketball tournament. This milestone was achieved on Sunday when they beat Canada 79-70 at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium near Lille.
In this pivotal match, D’Tigress Roar, Nigeria’s victory secured them a spot among the top three in Group B, ensuring their progression to the knockout stages. Unfortunately for Canada, the matchup sealed their fate, eliminating them without a single win in the tournament.
A standout performance came from US-born Ezinne Kalu, who led the scoring with 21 points, supported by Elizabeth Balogun’s 14 points. Their efforts were particularly notable during the third quarter, where Nigeria outscored Canada 23-5, effectively turning the game in their favor.
The draw for the women’s quarter-finals is set to occur later on Sunday, with the quarter-final games scheduled for Wednesday. Both the men’s and women’s knockout stages of the basketball tournament will take place in Paris.
