As the English Premier League kicks off on Friday, August 16, 2024, with Manchester United facing Fulham, fans will notice significant rule changes. According to a statement on the EPL website, match officials will be applying these updated rules.
The number of substitutes allowed during a match remains five, a rule introduced in the previous season. However, the limit on substitutes warming up simultaneously has increased from three to five per team.
The English Premier League will also implement a multiball system in the 2024/25 season to speed up the game, using 15 balls. When the match ball goes out of play and is not quickly retrievable, players must collect a new ball from the nearest cone. Ball assistants are not allowed to return the ball directly to players but must place it at a vacant cone instead. However, goalkeepers can receive a ball directly from assistants positioned behind the goals.

Regarding stoppage time, from this season, referees will only add extra time if the delay following a goal exceeds 30 seconds. This aims to give both teams sufficient time to resume play naturally, potentially reducing overall stoppage time, given last season’s average of 3.28 goals per match.
These updates aim to make the game smoother and more efficient, enhancing the overall viewing experience for fans.
