Fintiri Mourns Edo Election Outcome: “Nigeria’s Democracy is Dying”

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has criticized the results of the Edo State governorship election, expressing sorrow for the state of Nigeria’s democracy. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21 election. Fintiri condemned the election process, labelling it as disgraceful.

He specifically took issue with APC’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, for flying into Edo State via a private jet, ignoring police-imposed movement restrictions. Fintiri viewed this as a blatant disrespect for democratic principles. He also pointed out incidents of vote-buying, disruptions in the collation of votes, and results showing more votes than the number of accredited voters as clear signs of undermining democratic trust.

Fintiri stated that the APC’s efforts to discredit him wouldn’t divert attention from the core issues. He accused APC officials of defying movement restrictions and using armored escorts to intimidate voters, mocking the democratic process. He called on Nigerians to condemn these actions and demand accountability, emphasizing that the international community is observing and Nigeria deserves better governance. Fintiri shared results from INEC’s Irev portal to corroborate his claims and insisted on accountability.
