A clergyman named Niyi Peter from Osun State appeared in court on Thursday, September 26, 2024, following accusations of defaming well-known gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, also known as Omije Ojumi. Peter has been charged with three offenses related to his social media activities. He allegedly posted a picture of Akinnaanu labeling her song as one sung by a prostitute, which garnered a negative reaction from her supporters and peers.
The post in question was reportedly made in April 2024, around noon, in Osogbo’s Oke-Odo Area. During the court session led by Magistrate Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, it was highlighted that Peter’s actions on social media had defamed Bunmi Akinnaanu and damaged her reputation. Peter is also accused of sending a threatening voice message to Akinnaanu, suggesting she “will perish and never rise again,” adding an element of personal threat to the issue.
The charges against Peter are reportedly in violation of sections 373, 88, and 249(D) of the Criminal Code of Osun State, 2002. Peter entered a not-guilty plea in court, and his lawyer, Okobe Najite, sought bail for him. Magistrate Ayilara set the bail at ₦1 million, requiring Peter to provide two civil servant sureties. The next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, 2024, as the legal proceedings in this notable case continue.
