Kano Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has disclosed that his monthly earnings as a senator amount to over N21 million.
In a conversation with BBC Hausa Service, Kawu explained that while the official salary, set by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), is N1 million, deductions reduce it to around N600,000.
Nonetheless, he mentioned additional allowances that boost their total monthly pay to N21 million. These allowances cover expenses such as office operations, newspapers, local travel, and more.
This revelation came shortly after RMAFC, the body authorized to set the salaries and allowances of political office-holders, asserted that each of the 109 senators earns a total of N1.06 million per month in salary and allowances.
RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu made this statement to clear up recent disputes about the actual earnings of lawmakers. However, in his BBC Hausa interview, Kawu clarified, “The monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, it is around N600,000. Each senator receives N21 million monthly for office expenses.”
