The Lagos State government continues its efforts to rid the city of unlawful structures and ensure public safety. Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab revealed intensified action is underway to apprehend the ringleaders behind a disturbing housing operation under a major bridge.

Some months ago, tenants living precariously under Dolphins Estate Bridge were removed after it emerged landlords were renting makeshift units there for 250,000 naira yearly. Though dismantled, 36 occupants were arrested at the time. Commissioner Wahab now vows to prosecute those responsible for facilitating the dangerous illegal settlement.

He disclosed further details of the deplorable conditions uncovered, involving over 80 cramped rooms bizarrely partitioned into tiny spaces and supplied electricity – showing malicious negligence for tenant welfare. My ministry will spare no effort ensuring the situation’s sponsors face justice for endangering lives.

Separate anti-squatting drives freed 165 people from occupying pedestrian walkways, cleaning affected areas for public usage safety. Enforcement of proper bridge utilization by KAI members led to over a thousand arrests. We acknowledge the severity of issues like these and won’t back down from tackling root causes through legal means.

Progress curbing environmental health hazards was also reviewed, such as confiscating 900kg of outlawed styrofoam containers to date. Public cooperation has proven vital regarding this ban given styrofoam’s environmental damage potential. One thousand sanitation violators faced mobile court prosecution and cleanup duties, with monitoring teams dispatch across 20 LGAs.

Through firm yet reasonable steps, we in Lagos aim to uphold environmental standards and protect citizens from unsafe housing conditions. The wellbeing of Lagosians remains a top priority as reforms safeguard their rights to health and livable communities.
