On March 11, the Lagos State Government took a significant step towards addressing multiple concerns and promoting urban regeneration in Jakande Estate and Maiyegun, Lekki through demolishing illegal structures and shanties.
The main focus of the demolition was on unlawful constructions and shanties located within Jakande Estate and Maiyegun in Lekki. These regions were recognized as having unsanctioned structures that required immediate attention.
The demolition of illegal structures was carried out by the Lagos State Government with an aim to maintain order and enforce regulations in the region. Through this initiative, the government intends to create a sustainable living environment for residents that is more organized in nature.
The demolition has dual objectives. Firstly, it strives to release the coastal road alignment for the Lagos-Calabar Highway project initiated by the federal government. This highway scheme plays a crucial role in enhancing transportation and connectivity within this geographical region. Secondly, it intends to foster urban renewal and advancement in impacted territories by eliminating unlawful structures which obstruct planned development activities that align with overall urban outlook envisioned by authorities.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Environment Commissioner emphasized that creating a sustainable and livable built environment is of utmost importance to the government. In order to prevent further unauthorized construction, he stressed on maintaining consistent clean-up activities in the area. The government’s commitment towards retaining discipline and preventing any illegal building structure from resurfacing has been aptly reflected through this statement.
The Lagos State Government’s proactive stance on urban planning, regulation, and development is evident in the demolition of illegal structures and shanties in Jakande Estate and Maiyegun, Lekki.
