Ogunjimi

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of another Nollywood veteran actor, Ganiyu Oyeyemi, popularly known as Ogunjimi. This unfortunate news has plunged the Nigerian movie industry into mourning once again, as they bid farewell to a talented and respected figure.

Ogunjimi was widely recognized for his exceptional portrayal of herbalist roles, which made him a force to be reckoned with in the Yoruba Nollywood sector during the mid-90s to the early 2000s. His unique talent and ability to bring these characters to life endeared him to audiences and earned him a special place in the hearts of many.

The news of Ogunjimi’s passing spread across social media on Friday, April 26, 2024, leaving fans and colleagues in shock and disbelief. Kunle Afod, a younger colleague of Ogunjimi, took to his Instagram page to announce the tragic news and express his grief. In his heartfelt post, Afod wrote, “We tried our best but God loves you more. May his soul rest in peace. Baba Ogunjimi, RIP, Sun re oooo.” The outpouring of condolences and tributes from fellow actors and fans is a testament to the impact Ogunjimi had on the Nigerian movie industry.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of Ogunjimi’s death has not been ascertained, and the exact day of his passing remains unknown. The sudden loss of yet another Nollywood veteran has left the industry and its supporters in a state of sadness and reflection.

Sadly, Ogunjimi’s passing comes just days after the death of another Nollywood veteran, Pa Zulu Adigwe, who passed away on Tuesday, April 23rd. The industry has been grappling with a series of losses since the beginning of the year, with each departure leaving a void in the hearts of those who admired and worked alongside these talented individuals.

In recent weeks, Nollywood has mourned the tragic drowning of Junior Pope on a film set, as well as the passing of Aderounmu Adejumoke, known for her role as Esther in the popular Funke Akindele series, Jenifa’s Diary. The month of March was particularly devastating for the industry, as it witnessed the loss of three prominent actors. Yoruba actor Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, popularly known as Sisi Quadri, passed away on March 1 after a brief illness. The following day, John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor, a beloved figure in the industry, also left us. And on March 24, Amaechi Muonagor, another veteran thespian, succumbed to a prolonged battle with illness.

These successive losses have deeply affected the Nigerian movie industry, as it mourns the departure of talented individuals who have contributed immensely to its growth and success. Each loss serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the need to cherish and celebrate the legacies left behind by these remarkable actors.

As the industry continues to grapple with these losses, it is important to remember and honor the contributions of Ganiyu Oyeyemi, also known as Ogunjimi. His talent, dedication, and memorable performances will forever be etched in the hearts of those who admired his work. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family, friends, and colleagues find solace and strength during this difficult time.
