The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has unveiled plans to revise the minimum wages for players in the league, currently set at N150,000, to an undisclosed higher amount.
NPFL Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, emphasized the necessity for this wage adjustment in light of the prevailing economic conditions in Nigeria. He reaffirmed the league’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its players, expressing concern over reports of some clubs remunerating players below the stipulated minimum wage.
Elegbeleye underscored the league’s determination to ensure fair compensation for players, stating, “The least NPFL players can earn is N150,000, but by next season, we will revise it upward because even this minimum benchmark is not universally met across all clubs. Some players accept lower wages just to secure spots in certain clubs.”
To enforce compliance with the revised wage standards, Elegbeleye highlighted the implementation of stricter measures, including mandatory bank payments and thorough documentation of players’ financial transactions. He emphasized the importance of transparency in club operations, stating, “Compiling your account now is part of our clubs’ licensing. We want to ascertain the precise remuneration each player receives and ensure adherence to regulated payment channels.”
