Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has remarked that many leaders in Nigeria and other African nations deserve imprisonment or even the death penalty.
During a meeting on August 9 with six federal lawmakers at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Obasanjo shared his views. He emphasized that the primary issue lies within ourselves. According to him, whether Nigeria adopts a single six-year term or two four-year terms, no meaningful change will occur unless there is a shift in mentality and approach.
“The real issue is ourselves,” Obasanjo stated. He acknowledged the need for system reform but stressed that the character of people in government must change. He asserted that many current officials should be either in prison or facing capital punishment.
On the topic of African politics, Obasanjo argued for a rethinking of liberal democracy to promote broader inclusion. He noted that in Africa, there is often a consensus that leaves no room for genuine opposition, turning the term “loyal opposition” into a misnomer. In many African languages, opposition translates to “enemies.” Obasanjo highlighted how this mentality leads to a power grab that leaves the opposition sidelined, which he views as counterproductive. He called for unity to advance society.
