Organizers of the #Endbadgovernance protest have announced plans to hold an “anti-poor policies” demonstration on October 1st, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s economic strategies. They have formally requested security support from the Nigerian Police to ensure the safety of participants.
Coordinated by various advocacy groups, including the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), and Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), the protest aims to peacefully address grievances related to growing economic hardship. Hassan Soweto, ERC National Coordinator, urged Nigerians to join the protest to oppose policies he described as detrimental to the poor.
In a joint statement, the groups asked Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, to provide protection for the demonstrators, referencing the Police Establishment Act 2020, which mandates adequate security for public gatherings.
The Lagos protest will start at 7:30 a.m. under the Ikeja bridge, with participants marching to raise awareness. Organizers warned that the protest serves as a “warning and urgent cry” for immediate action from the Tinubu administration.
Their grievances include unmet demands from August’s “ten days of rage” protests, criticism of Tinubu’s alleged misuse of national funds, and condemnation of the recent fuel price hike, which has drastically impacted living costs and inflation. The rising costs have adversely affected traders, shopkeepers, and led to multinational companies exiting Nigeria, resulting in job losses.
Designating October 1st as a “National Day of Survival,” the organizers called on diverse societal groups to protest against hardships imposed by what they termed as anti-poor policies inspired by the IMF and World Bank. Additionally, they demanded the release of detained #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernance protesters, journalists, and activists.
