Port Harcourt Refinery
After being shut down in 2019, the Port Harcourt Refinery is now making remarkable progress towards resuming its operations. Nigeria’s objective is clear: to increase the production of refined petroleum products within the country and reduce its dependence on fuel imports. The revival of the refinery plays a crucial role in achieving this goal.
To restore the refinery to its former glory, the Nigerian government has invested a substantial amount of $1.5 billion for its repair. The primary focus of this investment is to restore and enhance the refinery’s infrastructure, ultimately improving its efficiency and productivity. Overseeing this important rehabilitation process is Maire Tecnimont, an Italian company known for its expertise in such projects. With a daily production capacity of around 210,000 barrels, the refinery is being rehabilitated in a phased manner. The initial phase has been successfully completed, and the refinery is currently undergoing rigorous testing to ensure that it complies with all operational standards.
The resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery, combined with the expected reactivation of the Kaduna Refinery, will have a positive impact on fuel supplies in Nigeria. By increasing domestic production of refined fuel and other petroleum products, the country aims to reduce its reliance on imported fuel, thereby enhancing its energy security and achieving greater self-sufficiency.
The ongoing rehabilitation and the imminent resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery mark significant progress in Nigeria’s journey towards strengthening its domestic refining capacity.
