The Lagos State Government has sounded an urgent warning regarding a potential building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, situated in the Ikeja area of the state. According to a statement released by Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), an emergency evacuation and demolition of the old Block 3 section of the barracks are imminent.
Oke-Osanyintolu detailed that a response team from LASEMA had thoroughly assessed the structural integrity of parts of the building and found them to be in a perilous condition. Given these findings, the agency will also be evacuating adjacent structures to forestall any potential loss of life or property.
The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the evacuation is a critical component of a broader response plan, which includes an in-depth assessment, safe and systematic evacuation, and controlled demolition of the affected structures. He highlighted that this preemptive demolition is being carried out under the vigilant supervision of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration, aiming to mitigate any secondary incidents that could arise from leaving the building unmanaged in its current state.
Oke-Osanyintolu also called for calm among local residents, urging them to avoid disseminating misinformation via social media platforms. He assured the public that LASEMA is closely monitoring and managing the situation to ensure safety and prevent any mishaps.
