A senior personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has suddenly passed away while attending an official engagement before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts at the National Assembly complex.
According to a statement from the House Spokesman and Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the incident occurred around 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. During the engagement with the legislative committee, the unnamed official reportedly developed sudden health complications.
Despite the immediate efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, the official tragically succumbed to his condition and passed away.
While the House has declined to release the name of the deceased out of respect for the family, LEADERSHIP has identified the official as Essien Etop Andrew, a Deputy Comptroller in the Finance Administration and Technical Service department of the Nigeria Customs Service.
In his statement, Rep. Rotimi expressed the House of Representatives’ deep sadness and regret over the sudden loss of the esteemed public servant. He conveyed the condolences of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, who described the deceased as a “dedicated public servant” whose contributions to the NCS and the nation will be greatly missed.
The House has stated that it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all necessary protocols are followed. Further information will be provided to the public as it becomes available.
