TCN: National Power Grid Restored

National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national power grid has been successfully restored after experiencing a disturbance on Thursday at 4:28 p.m. The TCN verified in a statement issued on Friday night that the patient had fully recovered by 10:00 p.m. that same day.

According to the TCN, gas supply constraints were the primary cause of the disruption, which resulted in a significant reduction in power generation capacity. The system frequency dropped quickly as a result of this reduction, which unbalanced the stability of the grid. An additional 167 MW of power loss and the subsequent grid collapse were caused by the unexpected tripping of Egbin generation turbine 3, which worsened the situation.

However, the TCN assured that the grid has been restored and is currently stable, transmitting all the generated power to distribution load centers across the country. The TCN expressed its commitment to addressing grid challenges and working actively to minimize disruptions. In cases where challenges extend beyond their control, the TCN collaborates with other stakeholders in the power sector to restore the grid to normal operation as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, the distribution companies of electricity (DisCos) have asked their customers to be patient during the blackout caused by the grid collapse. In statements released, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) asked customers to be patient while efforts were made to restore the normal power supply.

This incident marks the second collapse of the national grid this year, with the previous one occurring on February 4. The grid also experienced multiple collapses in 2023, including two in September and one in December. The TCN and other stakeholders are continuously working to improve the resilience of the grid and minimize the impact of such disruptions on power supply.
