"The Weekend,"

Nollywood’s latest sensation, “The Weekend,” directed by Daniel Oriahi, has made noteworthy strides at the Nigerian box office, grossing over ₦18 million shortly after its debut. The film’s astounding performance comes after it earned ₦8 million during its opening weekend. Further adding to its accolades, “The Weekend” was featured at the prestigious 68th edition of the BFI Film Festival in London and is set to screen at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, marking a significant milestone as the first independent Nollywood film to achieve this.

According to data from the Nigerian Box Office, “The Weekend” secured a spot among the top performers between September 6 and 8, 2024, showcasing its remarkable reception. Produced by Uche Okocha of Trino Motion Pictures, the psychological thriller delves into the dark and unsettling secrets of an orphaned woman’s soon-to-be in-laws. The narrative follows Nikiya, played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh, who is on a quest for acceptance within her fiancé Luc’s (Bucci Franklin) family. What begins as a supposedly heartwarming family visit soon spirals into a shocking revelation of hidden truths, reflecting the complexities of familial relationships and psychological trauma.
